What You Can Do About Gum Disease

It’s never too late to enhance your at-home oral care to improve the health of your gums.

Now that we are spending a lot more time at home, you now have a little more time to focus on your oral health and keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Whether our Milwaukee, WI, dentists, Dr. Sirisha Pulapaka and Dr. Paul Scholl, have told you that you have the beginning stages of gum disease (known as gingivitis) or you want to safeguard your smile from gum disease, here are ways to both treat and prevent gingivitis from the comfort of your own home.

Treating and Preventing Gingivitis

You may be surprised to know that you can easily reverse gingivitis just by improving your daily dental routine and habits. Gum disease often occurs because you aren’t properly caring for your smile.

Here are some simple habits you should be doing each and every day to both protect against and treat those early stages of gum disease:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes each with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Replace your toothbrush once bristles look old and worn (about every couple of months). Worn bristles won’t be able to clean as effectively and may even wear away tooth enamel.
  • You absolutely must floss at least once a day in order to remove plaque and food from between teeth and along the gum line. Brushing alone isn’t enough; you also need to floss if you want to promote healthier gums.
  • You should also visit your Milwaukee, WI, general dentist for routine checkups. Ideally, you should come in every six months, but make sure you are coming in at least once a year.
  • If you have dexterity issues or conditions that affect the strength of your hands (e.g. arthritis) turn to an electronic toothbrush, which can make it easier to maneuver around all areas of your mouth for a more thorough clean.
  • Eat a healthy diet that is chock full of the vitamins and nutrients you need for healthy gums. In fact, what you eat could also stave off gum disease or reverse gingivitis. Foods such as salmon and chicken, broccoli, sweet potatoes, bell peppers, and mushrooms provide anti-inflammatory effects, which can promote healthy gums.
